The distillery is characterized by its willingness to experiment both with malt and barrels. Benriach produces rather untypically for Speyside single malt whiskey that is sometimes very smoky and, in addition to the whiskey without peat smoke, matures it in a variety of different barrels. Benriach 12 Years The Smoky Twelve matured in a combination of former bourbon,
