Constructed of silvered bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of an oval laurel leaf wreath, the obverse with a rightward facing profile of Karl I, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with a Braunschweig horse topped by a royal crown, circumscribed by an inscription of DEM VERDIENST IN KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT (FOR MERIT IN ART AND SCIENCE), the obverse with an etched
